Excursions: Meeting #GIRLBOSS Sophia Amoruso

On Saturday, October 10th Third Place Books welcomed fashion lovers and entrepreneurs of all ages to meet #GIRLBOSS, Sophia Amoruso.

Most commonly known for founding fashion retailer, Nasty Gal, Amoruso released her page-turner, which is now a New York Times Best Seller, back in 2014. Her story begins with her dumpster diving and committing petty theft in her teens. That is until she started selling vintage clothes on eBay. Her shop quickly took off and eight years later she was the Founder & Executive Chairman of a hugely successful company.

The book is said to tells Amoruso’s personal story and offers insights on entrepreneurship and career advice for young women. An article in Forbes said she revolutionized marketing with a business built almost entirely on unpaid social media from day one, which draws millions of visitors back to the Nasty Gal site every month. As a fan of Amoruso and Nasty Gal, this event had my name written all over it.

I paid $17 to reserve a paperback copy for the signing and two seats for the reading and Q&A with the author. My friend Britney and I met outside the book store in Lake Forest Park on Saturday, just before 6 p.m. The #GIRLBOSS took the stage promptly on time and read several parts of her book before answering the audience's questions. She dished out her thoughts on designers, business plans, life lessons and learning how to follow your gut.

The line for the signing moved quickly and in no time it was our turn to get an autograph and photo with the author. Unfortunately, she was sitting so the photo feels a little awkward.

But she was easy to talk to and everyone who attended left with a Nasty Gal tote and $25 Nasty Gal gift card! That alone would have made the event worthwhile, but leaving with a fire in my belly and new goals in mind was the cherry on top.
