Turtlenecks Regain Their Cool

In December The New York Times Magazine asked "Can the Turtleneck Ever Be Cool Again?"

The article proposed that the appearance of a gray lamb’s wool turtleneck in Drake's iconic Hotline Bling video helped him deliver "a performance of masculinity that [a fan] hadn’t known it wanted."

The rest of the piece explains the history of the warm winter staple from 1924 to today's rapper apparel. It highlighted well-known turtleneck enthusiast, Steve Jobs, who designed his daily uniform after received nearly 100 turtlenecks from designer Issey Miyake. In Walter Isaacson’s biography of Jobs, he says the Apple co-founder "came to like the idea of having a uniform for himself, because of both its daily convenience … and its ability to convey a signature style.’’

While I prefer a little more variety in my day-to-day style, I agree that the comfort and simple aesthetic theses sweaters provide oozes effortless style. The article's author credits the Canadian rapper's 2015 global hit for the reclamation of the turtleneck as low-key option that "feels right, even if it looks off." Now that is debatable because from what I've read, men and women have enjoyed these high-collared sweaters for decades over because they're an even combination of simple and chic.

I slipped on my Only Mine sweater for my latest photography session with Victoria West Photography and Shaun Turley Photography in Seattle, Washington. I completed my look with The Fairfax High Rise Jean from Forever 21 and a pair of my favorite heels from Calvin Klein.

This staple is easy to wear to work or on a night out. The warm fibers prevent you from needing a heavy coat, while the sweater's simplicity makes it a great match for jeans, skirts or leggings. Luckily, it's not hard to find a plethora of plain and patterned turtlenecks online and in stores like Macy's, Nordstrom and H&M. Some of this season's sweaters steals include Splendid's Fitted Turtleneck ($58) and H&M's Cashmere Turtleneck ($39).
