My Letter to Women on International Women's Day
Today, March 8th, marks International Women's Day. While I have featured strong and beautiful women in my Girl Crush series, I wanted to write a special post today to celebrate the women in my life and women everywhere.
I can't write about women without first acknowledging how lucky I am to be surrounded by so many smart and kind women of all ages. Women like my mother who shaped so much of my character by reminding me to always be myself. My friends who have shared joy, laughter and heartbreak with me in school and now. And women who have taught me to be strong and work hard, just by setting an example. I am who I am because of incredible women and because they have done so much for me, I wanted to write a letter to all women.
Thank you. Thank you for taking part in the world of women. A world where you're probably not getting paid as well as the guy working next to you, where people judge you by the clothes you're wearing or the amount of makeup on your face, where walking alone or just being on your own is scary, and a world that actively tries to pit us against one another.
I want to remind you that you are beautiful, when you're dressed to the nines or in your most worn out sweats. Just by waking up and being you, you're a moving part of what defines women.
As time goes on, the world is progressing. But it isn't progressing fast enough. Women like Olivia Munn and Ciara are put down because their significant others loss the big game. Women are still told what they should be doing to their bodies and yet they aren't trusted when they say those bodies have been violated.
For 2016, I hope the world learns to embrace the magnitude of differences that define womanhood because each of us are the moving pieces pushing women's rights (and not to mention the human race) forward. But for today, I want you to take the time to thank the women in your own life that help move you forward towards your best life. Happy International Women's Day.
